A group of young windsurfers encountered rapidly changing and severe weather conditions on Garda Lake on Sunday afternoon. The incident involved several young participants, ranging in age from 10 to 17 and representing multiple nationalities, who were sailing when strong winds and large waves caused multiple capsizings. Rescue operations were swiftly mobilized, with three separate teams successfully retrieving a total of 22 young windsurfers from the water.
Following the rescue, the individuals were transported to the Torbole port, where medical staff provided necessary examinations and first aid treatment. According to reports from the Italian press agency Ansa, the prompt response was critical in preventing more severe outcomes for the participants. The adverse conditions were not limited to Sunday afternoon.
Earlier that week, the lake had shown signs of instability, with meter-high waves causing difficulties on Saturday evening. By Sunday, wind gusts had intensified, generating waves exceeding one and a half meters, which posed a danger to numerous recreational vessels on the lake. The severity of the conditions required significant intervention to ensure the safety of the young windsurfers involved.
