Temporary restrictions on fishing are being implemented across various regions due to deteriorating environmental conditions affecting local aquatic life. Authorities have suspended term-limited fishing activities citing multiple adverse factors, including critically low water levels, elevated water temperatures, and reduced dissolved oxygen concentrations harmful to fish populations. According to Matevž Podjed, acting director of the institute, the current conditions place significant stress on aquatic ecosystems.
He noted that certain species, such as trout, are exhibiting distress behaviors, observed moving along riverbanks. Podjed emphasized that current water temperatures, reaching 23 to 24 degrees Celsius, are deemed lethal for these populations. Furthermore, he stressed that recreational fishing adds unnecessary stress to the fish, and avoiding such activities is crucial for maintaining sustainable management and healthy water resources.
The geographical scope of these closures is expanding rapidly, with the Sava River now included among the areas under temporary restriction. Podjed indicated that the magnitude of this widespread fishing closure is unusual for Slovenia in recent years. In response to the environmental pressures, the Slovenian Fishermen’s Federation has also issued a public appeal, urging all fishermen to voluntarily cease activities until conditions improve.
