Cadillac has faced ongoing difficulties with its braking system throughout the current season. Despite implementing several corrective measures intended to mitigate such issues, a brake fire occurred during the Vietnamese round of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The vehicle’s braking system relies on advanced air-cooling technology.
These specialized brake channels are designed to capture maximum amounts of airflow without negatively impacting the car’s overall aerodynamic balance. This captured air is then channeled through numerous openings in the brake discs to rapidly cool critical components, which can reach temperatures up to 1200°C during operation. Concerns regarding occasional brake fires persisted, leading to notable incidents, such as the race in Austria where both of the team’s cars were forced to retire early due to the problem.
In response, Cadillac introduced revised front brake channels for the Hungarian event. However, these modifications proved insufficient to resolve the underlying issue, as demonstrated when Valtteri Bottas experienced another brake fire during the race. The recurrence of these brake failures highlights the persistent challenge in managing the extreme thermal loads generated by the high-performance braking system.
