The European Commission confirmed that the process for selecting a special EU representative for the Sahel region adhered to established regulations. According to European Commission spokesperson Anouar el Anouni, the selection followed the prescribed procedure. El Anouni stated that all EU special representatives are appointed according to relevant protocols, a standard that also governs the appointment of the new representative for the Sahel, Danish diplomat Birgitte Nygaard Markussen.
Previously, the initial candidate for the role was Fajonová. She was initially proposed by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, for the position of EU special representative for the Sahel. This proposal originated from the European External Action Service (EEAS), which manages the EU’s foreign policy initiatives.
However, Kallas subsequently withdrew this proposal following an expression of opposition from Slovenia. The Commission’s assurance emphasizes adherence to established governance frameworks throughout the entire selection process for the Sahel. The confirmation of the procedures followed aims to maintain transparency regarding the appointment of high-level diplomatic roles within the European Union.
