Starting in 2024, the municipality of Venice plans to implement a fee for tourists who enter the city but do not remain overnight. City authorities stated that this measure aims to help manage the volume of visitors to one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. The implementation of this charge is part of ongoing efforts by the city to address sustainability concerns related to high tourist traffic.
Historically, the fee has been applied during peak tourist seasons, such as the period spanning from April through the end of July. Data from the German press agency dpa indicates that during the most recent peak season, over 650,000 visitors paid the required entrance fee. This revenue generated more than five million euros.
The financial impact of the fee has shown a significant increase over recent years. In the first year the charge was instituted, the revenue was approximately two million euros, while the previous year recorded earnings of around 5.4 million euros. For the current year, the municipality anticipates that the revenue generated from the entrance fees will reach approximately two million euros.
These updated regulations are designed to manage the flow of visitors into the historic city center, thereby supporting the long-term viability of Venice as a major global destination.
