Former members of the Human Rights Protection Committee, including Franco Juri, Pavel Gantar, Spomenka Hribar, Gregor Tomc, Rastko Močnik, Igor Vidmar, and Vlado Miheljak, have launched an initiative calling for a referendum. With assistance from civil society groups, non-governmental organizations, and opposition parties, the signatories successfully gathered 44,619 voter signatures. This petition was submitted to the DZ on Tuesday.
In addition to the referendum push, Juri explained that the initiative also addresses concerns regarding the potential deletion of procedural safeguards. The primary focus of the opposition is a proposed amendment that they argue restricts the ability of individuals who are the subject of an investigation. The core concern revolves around the limitation of challenging the initial act ordering the investigation.
Currently, individuals have a right to seek a constitutional assessment of the relevance and justification of such an investigation. The proposed changes, according to the proponents, would eliminate this avenue, thereby curtailing established legal protections for those under investigation. The movement seeks to maintain the procedural safeguards that allow for such constitutional review, viewing the proposed amendment as an overreach that diminishes fundamental rights.
