In November of last year, 76-year-old Gottschalk, an individual not particularly well known in Slovenia, publicly disclosed his diagnosis with epithelioid angiosarcoma. This condition is a highly rare and aggressive form of cancer. Belonging to the sarcoma family, this rare blood vessel cancer originates from cells that surround blood vessels.
It is recognized for its rarity, coupled with a tendency for rapid growth and a significant risk of recurrence even following successful treatment protocols. Gottschalk reported undergoing two surgical procedures and thirty-three radiation treatments, during which time medical professionals reportedly removed all visible signs of the disease. He stated on the social media platform Instagram that he currently feels healthy and is completely cancer-free.
Despite this positive update, he remains aware that the disease carries a risk of returning. To address this, he has enrolled in a research project at the University of Greifswald. As part of this study, he is receiving a therapeutic sarcoma vaccine.
The treatment plan involves a total of twelve scheduled doses. This participation underscores a proactive approach to managing the long-term prognosis associated with his specific type of cancer.
