More rights for air passengers: compensation, luggage, free name correction

Members of the European Parliament have approved amendments to the regulations governing air passengers’ rights, following an agreement reached with the Council of the European Union in the Conciliation Committee. The primary objective of these rules is to provide comprehensive protection for passengers experiencing travel disruptions, including instances of denied boarding, delays, and cancellations. Virginijus Sinkevičius, Vice-President of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (Greens/EFA, Lithuania), stated that significant effort was dedicated to ensuring that existing passengers’ rights are maintained while simultaneously enhancing safeguards for vulnerable groups.

Specifically, the amendments aim to provide better protection for families, individuals with reduced mobility, and other persons requiring enhanced assistance. The rapporteur for the legislation, Andrej Novakov (EPP, Bulgaria), characterized the final vote as a positive outcome for all involved parties. The approved amendments solidify the framework designed to support passengers throughout their journey.

These updated regulations are intended to ensure a higher standard of care and compensation for passengers when their air travel plans are interrupted. The measures reflect a commitment to strengthening consumer protection within the air travel sector across the European Union.
