End of two decades? Hamas announces handover of power

Mohamed al-Farra, the head of Hamas’ administration, has announced his resignation and the subsequent handover of responsibilities to the National Committee for the Management of the Gaza Strip (NCAG). Al-Farra stated that Hamas would immediately cease its direct political oversight of the Gaza Strip’s administration. However, he confirmed that current public employees and other public sector workers are expected to maintain their professional duties until the NCAG assumes full control.

In a statement, al-Farra indicated that following the completion of all necessary preparations for the governmental system’s transfer in Gaza, he was resigning from his roles as chairman of the committee monitoring governmental work and chairman of the governmental crisis committee. This development marks a significant procedural change within the governance structure of the Gaza Strip. The announcement signals a transition in the leadership managing the daily operations of the territory.

The handover process aims to consolidate management under the NCAG. While the political direction provided by Hamas is set to conclude, the immediate continuity of essential public services is expected to be maintained by existing personnel. This transition is occurring amid ongoing developments in the situation within Gaza.
