Violence erupted on Sunday evening at the Negombo prison, located approximately 40 kilometers north of Colombo. The facility reportedly houses nearly 10,000 inmates serving their sentences. According to police reports, the unrest was triggered by a confrontation between members of two rival drug gangs within the correctional facility.
Hospital sources informed Al Jazeera that the violence resulted in the deaths of at least 16 inmates and four guards.
