An environmental concern arose last Monday off the coast of Salamun Veliki island, located near Vrsar. According to reports summarizing the incident, a swimmer observed a private yacht, registered under the Austrian flag, anchored near the shoreline. The vessel was reportedly engaged in work on its hull.
The swimmer alerted authorities after noticing a pronounced chemical odor emanating from the work area, which was described as similar to nitro thickener. This strong smell led the individual to suspect that hazardous substances might have been released, potentially damaging the surrounding marine environment. Following the report, the swimmer notified both the local police and the port captain’s office.
Personnel from the port captain’s office in Poreč promptly arrived at the scene to conduct an inspection. Subsequently, the Croatian Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure confirmed that an official investigation was completed. The ministry determined that the activity conducted by the yacht violated environmental regulations.
As a result of the investigation, the individual responsible for the work was issued a fine amounting to 5,000 euros. The ministry emphasized that painting or performing industrial work directly on the sea poses a documented risk to the local ecosystem, necessitating strict adherence to environmental protocols for maritime activities.
