A pilot initiative is set to see the Annamitra Foundation, an organization affiliated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), take charge of preparing school meals within Kolkata under the municipal authorities. This proposed undertaking mandates that all provided meals be exclusively vegetarian. Consequently, the nutritional plan will substitute eggs with alternative protein sources, including soy and legumes.
As of yet, the project has not commenced, and there remains uncertainty regarding whether the scope of these specialized meals will be extended to other educational institutions. Despite the preliminary nature of the plan, the announcement has generated considerable political debate. Critics have accused the government of allowing religious and ideological viewpoints to dictate established food policy.
In response to these criticisms, the state Prime Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, refuted the allegations. He asserted that the primary objective of the project is solely to ensure that children receive clean and high-quality nutrition, rather than promoting any specific religious doctrine. The core of the debate centers on the composition of the planned menu and the overall governance of the meals provided to students.
The government maintains that the focus remains strictly on public health standards while the opposition views the mandate as an overreach into cultural policy.
