The new heat wave is already threatening the Tour start

Thierry Gouvenou, the technical director for a French cycling team, expressed significant concern regarding the current operational challenges facing the race. Gouvenou noted that the event organizers have faced disruptions before, stating, “We are not facing this problem for the first time, but this time the situation is worse because of the circumstances we witnessed in May and June.”

He pointed out that while the race history includes disruptions from wars, strikes, civil unrest, and the coronavirus pandemic, the cancellation of the event specifically due to extreme heat is a novel occurrence. This year, the possibility of such a cancellation has become more probable following weather forecasts predicting temperatures reaching up to 44 degrees Celsius across certain regions in both France and Spain.

The unprecedented nature of the heat threat contrasts sharply with the historical record of the race. While past events have faced various interruptions, the potential for weather-related shutdowns presents a new logistical challenge for the organizers. Despite these environmental uncertainties, Tadej Pogačar remains the primary favorite heading into the Tour.

The focus remains on the logistical planning required to ensure the safety of the athletes across the demanding schedule. The coordination between race officials and meteorological services will be crucial to determine if the race can proceed on schedule, or if changes to the planned time and route will be necessary. The organizers are closely monitoring the evolving forecast to mitigate potential risks.
