Forgotten children of the IRIS Center? 16 years waiting for school, which is still not there

The situation surrounding the IRIS Center has persisted for over a decade, according to one of the parents, Jurij Stariha, who is advocating for adequate care for the children within. The ongoing story began in 2010 when the Institute of Building Construction issued a concerning assessment. They determined the building was dangerously susceptible to earthquakes and fires, and that it was structurally unstable.

For fourteen years, this opinion remained unresolved, ultimately leading to the relocation of the children to temporary facilities on Tobačni 5 Street in 2024. Jurij Stariha powerfully states, “Fourteen years means that the generation of children who enrolled in the first grade in 2010 has finished primary and secondary school in between and has already left the center. Nothing has happened.”

Instead of receiving a new, modern center designed for their specific needs, blind, visually impaired, and autistic children have been accommodated in crowded classrooms.

The persistent lack of action highlights a significant concern regarding the long-term well-being of these vulnerable children and the continued operation of the IRIS Center.
