Eight days trapped in a concrete cage, ‘happy’ chatting with rescuers

An earthquake that struck Venezuela eight days ago resulted in significant devastation across the affected areas. Numerous structures, including residential homes, commercial centers, and various buildings, sustained damage, and the local international airport was reported to be severely damaged. Among the damaged properties was the Galerias Playa Grande shopping center in Catia La Mar.

Inside this complex, an individual named Hernán Gil was found sheltering in the basement. Mr. Gil was working in a small concrete cabin located in the parking lot near the shopping center when the tremors occurred.

It was reportedly within this cabin that he survived the intense shaking. He remained trapped in the concrete enclosure for a prolonged period. Rescue teams located him four days following the earthquake, but it took an additional four days before he could be safely extricated from the cell, making his total ordeal span eight days.

The rescue process was described as arduous.
