Police and protesters clash in the parliament square in Tirana

Demonstrators are demanding the halt of a proposed resort construction project situated on the uninhabited Albanian island of Sazan and in the adjacent coastal town of Zvernec. The development, reportedly owned by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, has drawn significant opposition due to concerns over its impact on the sensitive Vjosa-Narta protected coastal area. Environmental advocates argue that the construction threatens critical habitats utilized by numerous animal species, including local populations of flamingos, seals, and sea turtles.

The tension escalated into visible unrest following protests held on Tuesday, during which demonstrators reportedly threw eggs at vehicles belonging to members of parliament. Following these events, police intervened, resulting in the arrest of six individuals. Today, the situation saw heightened security measures as police units established cordons around the area.

Reports indicate that the police utilized pepper spray during confrontations with the protesters. When some demonstrators attempted to breach the police cordon, a clash ensued. This confrontation regrettably resulted in the death of one protester.

The protests continue to highlight the conflict between large-scale development interests and the preservation of the region’s vital coastal ecosystems.
