Wild night on Pakleni otoki: a sunken sailing boat with 11 passengers and a boat with lost anchors

During the night of June 30 into July 1, multiple coordinated rescue operations were executed in the area under the jurisdiction of the Luka Capitanija Split, according to reports from the Croatian Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure. The operations were necessitated by severe stormy weather conditions affecting the region. One specific incident involved a motorboat that required assistance near the Pakleni Islands.

The vessel experienced significant mechanical failures, specifically the loss of two anchors and malfunction of its propulsion engines. The boat signaled for help around 11 p.m. A total of nine individuals were aboard the vessel.

Due to the combined failure of the engines and the loss of the anchors, authorities assessed a risk of the boat sinking. Local information centers reported the distress call, which was supplemented by the deployment of a red signal rocket. Rescue teams responded to stabilize the situation.

Upon intervention, the crew was safely brought to shore, and no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew. The successful rescue highlighted the dangers posed by severe maritime weather, particularly when essential equipment, such as anchors, fails, compromising the seaworthiness of the boat during the night. The incident underscores the vigilance required by maritime authorities to ensure safety across the local waters.
