Division in the Catholic Church? Despite the Pope’s prohibition, four bishops have been consecrated

The Holy Pius X Fraternity conducted a ceremony on Wednesday involving the consecration of four bishops. The group, which has maintained opposition to reforms within the Catholic Church for several decades, held the event in the Swiss village of Ecône. According to reports from The Guardian, the ceremony was attended by a significant number of believers and priests.

The consecration process was overseen by Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta. Notably, Bishop de Galarreta himself was consecrated in 1988 without the explicit permission of the papacy. Under established church law, such an action typically results in excommunication, a status that now potentially affects both Bishop de Galarreta and the four newly consecrated bishops.

The event highlights ongoing tensions regarding ecclesiastical authority within the Catholic Church. The presence of bishops from Switzerland, France, and two from the United States underscores the international nature of the fraternity’s activities. These actions take place despite established protocols governing episcopal appointments within the Catholic Church.

The consecrations conducted by the Holy Pius X Fraternity remain in direct contrast to official church doctrine and procedure.
