Russia is supposed to control the entire Lugansk region of Ukraine

Russian officials in Lugansk asserted last summer that they had achieved complete dominance over the area. However, reports from German news agency dpa, alongside maps provided by Ukrainian military observers, indicate that a portion of the region surrounding Novoyehorivka remains under Ukrainian influence. A Russian tank unit operating within the Luhansk region is pictured.

The situation reflects a long-standing struggle for control. Pro-Russian separatists initially seized most of the region back in 2014. Subsequently, Russia acknowledged the self-proclaimed republics of Lugansk and Donetsk and deployed forces to these entities just two days prior to the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

It’s important to note that the international community consistently rejected any claims of independence for these republics. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the anniversary of the Buh tragedy, stating that Russia had anticipated the republics’ autonomy would be established within a timeframe of two months. The ongoing conflict continues to shape the landscape of this contested region.
