The karst municipalities should soon declare fire danger

The declaration of heightened fire danger has been announced for the region, effective from Tuesday. Officials are coordinating efforts across the four karst municipalities, with the municipality of Komen leading the initiative, though full coordination remains in progress. Andrej Sila, the Mayor of the municipality of Sežana, confirmed the declaration, citing the significant impact of the current warm period and heat wave on the natural environment.

He assessed that the drying grass and vegetation have dramatically increased the potential for wildfires compared to previous periods. This elevated state of danger necessitates immediate and increased preventive action. The declaration mandates several heightened safety protocols.

Authorities plan to intensify public awareness campaigns regarding the strict prohibition of burning vegetation in natural areas. Furthermore, ground observation levels are being increased across the affected karst landscape. These measures are a direct response to the escalating risk, particularly given the area’s history, which includes a significant fire event on the Kras plateau two years prior.

The objective of the coordinated effort among the municipalities is to mitigate risks and safeguard the natural resources of the region. Competent authorities are focused on strengthening public compliance and ensuring continuous monitoring to prevent any escalation of the fire threat.
