Latvian intelligence has reported detecting indications that Russia is preparing limited military provocations targeting the Baltic states or Poland. According to reports, these actions are not anticipated to be large-scale military attacks but rather calibrated maneuvers intended to convey a political message and exert pressure on the NATO alliance. A high-ranking political source associated with a NATO member state suggested that these activities might be orchestrated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to test the readiness of the United States to defend smaller member nations, specifically mentioning Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Amid these developments, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk voiced significant concern. Speaking following the Eastern flank summit in Gdansk, Tusk characterized the current geopolitical situation as highly unstable, warning that various forms of escalation remain possible in the coming weeks and months. He emphasized the necessity for collective preparation, stating, “We will want to prepare as a group of countries that are not ready to defend themselves.”
The reports indicate that the underlying objective appears to be challenging the cohesion and commitment of the alliance structure.
The focus remains on how these limited provocations will attempt to test the resolve and defensive posture of the NATO members, particularly concerning the Article V guarantees for the eastern flank.
