Ebola epidemic in the DRC: More than 300 fatalities

Director of the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Jean Kaseya, has reported significant strain on healthcare infrastructure amid the ongoing outbreak. Kaseya stated that the country has already utilized 95 percent of its available hospital beds, even though the Ebola epidemic, which was declared on May 15, has not yet reached its peak intensity. He stressed the critical necessity of expanding the number of hospital beds and constructing additional health centers to manage the surge in cases.

According to the German press agency dpa, the rate at which confirmed infections are rising is raising considerable concern. Kaseya noted that the current level of activity within the first five weeks of this Ebola epidemic has not been matched by any previous outbreak in Africa. In response to the escalating situation, the CDC plans to commence clinical trials for two potential Ebola drugs next week.

These trials will take place in Bunia, the capital of the Ituri province, which served as the epicenter of the outbreak. The focus on these experimental treatments underscores the urgent efforts to combat the spread of the disease and mitigate the impact of the rapidly increasing caseload.
