Severe Weather Warnings Issued Across Eastern Germany
Authorities issued the highest alert level on Sunday afternoon for 18 districts in Bavaria, Saxony, and Brandenburg due to rapidly approaching severe weather. Meteorologists predicted extremely heavy rain, with potential accumulations of up to 30 liters per square meter within a short timeframe. The forecasts also included strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour, and the possibility of significant hail, with individual stones potentially reaching a diameter of up to three centimeters.
The initial warnings were triggered for Berlin and its surrounding areas in the morning. The intense rainfall caused disruptions at the Berlin Open tennis tournament, where substantial flooding impacted a portion of the venue. Tournament organizers activated their crisis plan and initiated the evacuation of attendees.
Hundreds of individuals sought refuge from the storm at the Grunewald railway station and within the Auerbach tunnel. Organizers reported that standing water inundated sections of the sports complex, and damage was sustained to electrical wiring. The situation prompted the implementation of emergency protocols to ensure public safety amidst the extreme weather conditions.
