Following the successful rescue of a humpback whale from a sandbank near Lübeck on Friday, the animal was observed in the waters surrounding Wismar on Saturday. This sighting marked a second stranding for the whale, dubbed “Timmy,” over the course of the weekend. Marine biologist Thilo Maack, representing Greenpeace, expressed optimism regarding the situation.

He believes this latest instance of Timmy being stranded is deliberate, intended to facilitate a subsequent rescue if the whale chooses to be rescued again. Maack stated that they continue to maintain hope for Timmy’s recovery and eventual return. The team remains confident that the humpback whale will be able to escape and swim back into the deep waters of the Baltic Sea.

Their ultimate goal is for Timmy to then traverse the North Sea and reach the Atlantic Ocean, his natural habitat. Environment Minister Till Backhaus, representing Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, echoed this sentiment, sharing his desire for a positive resolution to the story. He affirmed that the rescue team has not yet relinquished their efforts to save Timmy, demonstrating continued dedication to the whale’s wellbeing.
