Alpinist Dies Following Rockfall on Vršič Slope
The Slovenian Emergency Service reported a fatal incident on Saturday around 4:00 PM involving an alpinist on the Vršič slope. A rockfall resulted in serious injury to the climber, who was part of a group ascending the mountain. Immediately following the incident, the Mountain Rescue Team GRS Kamnik responded, providing initial first aid at the scene.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, an emergency team from the Brnik rescue team swiftly arrived and transported the injured climber to Korošica via helicopter. Upon arrival at Korošica, an emergency doctor from the Kamnik emergency medical service confirmed the alpinist’s death. The other members of the climbing group were safely evacuated from the cliff face by foot, descending to safety before worsening weather conditions arrived.
This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with alpine climbing. The coordinated response of the multiple emergency teams – including the initial response from GRS Kamnik and the subsequent helicopter transport – was crucial in managing the situation.
