Slovenian Children’s Physical Performance Lagging Behind Pre-Pandemic Levels
New analysis of sports and physical education data reveals that the physical performance of Slovenian schoolchildren remains below levels observed prior to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, six years after the initial outbreak. Concerns are growing regarding the state of children’s health, particularly with a rising proportion of obese children. The trend is most pronounced among boys, and the disparity in physical capabilities between students is widening.
Researchers are questioning whether Slovenia is raising the first generation of children who will be less physically active and, consequently, healthy than their parents. Professor Dr. Gregor Starc, from the Faculty of Sport, highlighted the severity of the situation.
“The differences between Slovenian children are becoming enormous,” he stated. The analysis indicates a concerning trend of increasing inactivity and a growing prevalence of obesity within the school-aged population. Experts attribute the decline to a combination of factors, including reduced participation in sports and physical education programs, alongside lifestyle changes.
Further investigation is planned to understand the long-term implications of these trends and to develop effective strategies for promoting children’s physical well-being.
