Maritime Officials Stress Importance of Human Oversight Amid Rising Accidents at Sea

Maritime officials are emphasizing the critical role of human attention and judgment in navigation, following a recent tragic accident and a concerning trend of incidents involving vessels on the sea. Jadran Klinec, director of the Maritime Administration, issued a warning regarding the increasing reliance on technology, stating, “The feeling of being in control is growing on the sea. We have GPS, autopilot, various navigation systems and powerful vessels.

But technology cannot replace human attention and judgment.”

Klinec’s comments follow a recent incident in Croatia where four crew members of a sailing boat perished after a collision with a catamaran. While the specifics of the accident are still under investigation, authorities believe it represents a broader issue. “Such accidents also happen here,” Klinec stated.

“We had a case when a cargo ship collided with a fishing vessel. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, but the scenario was very similar.”

Investigations are ongoing to determine the precise cause of the Croatian accident, and to assess potential contributing factors across maritime operations. The incident underscores the need for continued vigilance and a balanced approach to utilizing technological advancements within the challenging environment of the sea.
