Aleksa Balašević: about the new film, ‘home’ Maribor and his father’s eternity

Slovenian Support Fuels Filmmaker’s New Project

Aleksa Balašević, a filmmaker currently focused on his new project, Nevernik, credits Slovenia with significant support and a newfound creative environment. Balašević and his family have resided in Maribor since 1999, a decision rooted in a complex and deeply personal connection to the country. Initially drawn to Slovenia by the beauty of the region, the move was significantly influenced by circumstances surrounding his sister’s recovery.

Following a serious medical event that resulted in paralysis, Balašević and his family found vital care and support in Maribor, a stark contrast to his birthplace of Novi Sad. He notes that Maribor and Novi Sad represent distinct environments. “Maribor became our second home,” Balašević stated.

“The city’s welcoming attitude, particularly regarding my sister’s treatment, was crucial.” He also highlighted the supportive reception offered to another family member, Đorđe. Currently, Balašević is enthusiastic about Slovenia’s early backing for Nevernik. He emphasizes the unique collaborations he’s experienced, stating that the support offered has surpassed what he anticipated within a solely domestic production.

The filmmaker continues to find inspiration in the landscapes of the Pohorje plateau and the expansive skies above Maribor.
