European Council Reaffirms Support for Ukraine Following Vrh Summit
Vrh, Slovenia – The European Council concluded its initial summit conclusions today, reaffirming the bloc’s continued strong and unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. This marks the first time all 27 member states have agreed on a statement regarding Ukraine since December 2024. The agreement follows a period of significant challenge, with unanimous conclusions on Ukraine previously blocked by the former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico also voiced reservations on several occasions. The change in leadership in Hungary, with Peter Magyar succeeding Orban, facilitated a key political shift. The EU has now resolved to implement sanctions targeting various sectors of the Russian economy, a move intended to respond to the ongoing aggression against Ukraine.
These sanctions replace a previous six-tiered system. The summit, held in Vrh, Slovenia, represents a crucial step forward in the EU’s coordinated response to the conflict. Discussions centered on bolstering Ukraine’s resilience and securing a lasting resolution.
