Rare Red Firefinch Possesses Poisonous Spines, Poses Risk to Humans

A newly documented characteristic of the red firefinch ( Carduelis minima) is raising concerns among marine biologists and public health officials. The small, vividly colored fish, known for its distinctive long fins and striped appearance resembling a lion’s mane, possesses venomous spines along its back, abdomen, and tail. According to reports from Net.hr, contact with these spines causes immediate and intense pain in humans, accompanied by significant swelling and, in serious instances, respiratory difficulties.

Experts emphasize the critical need for immediate action following any contact. The venom is particularly sensitive to heat, and recommendations advise immersing the affected area in warm water – up to 45 degrees Celsius – as a preliminary treatment before seeking professional medical assistance. The red firefinch represents a significant threat to the Adriatic and Mediterranean marine ecosystems.

Recognized as an exceptionally aggressive and voracious predator, it is considered one of the most dangerous predators within the Mediterranean Sea. Further research is ongoing to fully understand the extent of its impact on the region’s biodiversity.
