Night Russian attack on Kyiv: a historic symbol is on fire

Fire Engulfs Kijev-Pechersk Lavra Following Attack

A significant fire has broken out within the Kijev-Pechersk Lavra, a vast monastery and cave complex containing several important Orthodox holy sites and relics in Kyiv, Ukraine. The incident follows a reported attack and is the second time the complex has been impacted since the beginning of the extensive Russian invasion. Initial reports indicate that the fire has spread throughout the monastery, which houses some of the most revered religious artifacts.

As of this reporting, four individuals have been confirmed dead and 23 have sustained injuries, including a child and a pregnant woman. The Assumption Cathedral within the Lavra sustained damage, with its roof now affected by the fire. Authorities are working to contain the blaze and assess the full extent of the damage.

The Kijev-Pechersk Lavra has a history of damage, having been previously affected during World War II. “The roof of one of the holiest places in the Christian world, the Assumption Cathedral of the Kijev-Pechersk Lavra, is on fire. We pray for the salvation of this sacred place,” a statement read.

Investigations into the cause of the night attack are ongoing.
