Swiss on a referendum on population limitation

The “No Switzerland with 10 million! (Pledge for sustainability)” initiative calls for a restriction of immigration, in order to prevent the number of inhabitants from exceeding ten million by 2050. According to the French press agency AFP, foreigners in this rich Alpine country with 9.1 million inhabitants represent more than a quarter of the population.

According to the proposal, the government and parliament should take measures to restrict immigration, especially regarding asylum and family reunification, if the number of permanent residents before 2050 exceeds 9.5 million. If the number of permanent residents before 2050 exceeds ten million, Switzerland should withdraw from international agreements that contribute to population growth, including those with the EU, which allows free movement of people. Since the introduction of this pledge, Switzerland has not taken any measures to restrict immigration.
