Shooting 206 brown bears: massacre or necessity?

In a country considered one of the most important habitats for brown bears in Europe, the issue of coexistence with the largest predator remains a subject of disagreement among various stakeholders. The debate was further complicated by the decision of the administrative court, which temporarily suspended the implementation of the shooting until the final decision in the administrative dispute. Residents of areas where it is not unusual to encounter a bear do not understand why the court needs so much time.

The decision for the shooting is valid until the end of 2026, so they want it decided as soon as possible. One of these areas is Rakitna, about 30 kilometers away from Ljubljana. Only Glavan has lived there for about two decades.

But how does life in an environment where a brown bear is present look like? How does the presence of this predator affect his daily life? “We are a little afraid,” he admits.

“I am a little afraid.”
