Nicotine and sharp stick: only five children were treated in May

Iqos Filters Pose Serious Risk to Young Children

Five children required medical attention in May due to ingestion of Iqos cigarette filters, according to a warning from pediatric gastroenterologists. Professor Dr. Matjaž Homan, at the University Clinical Center Ljubljana’s Pediatric Clinic, highlighted the potential dangers associated with the filters.

The primary concern stems from the presence of nicotine within the filters, alongside a small, sharp metal component. Dr. Homan explained that this combination presents a significant risk of poisoning and gastrointestinal damage.

“The metal part is particularly hazardous,” he stated, “potentially causing damage to the lining of the gastrointestinal tract or, in severe cases, perforation of the intestinal wall.”

Following the ingestion of the filters by five children, medical professionals initiated immediate treatment. Doctors typically remove the metal component through an endoscopic procedure, emphasizing the need for careful and rapid intervention. Complications can arise if the foreign object becomes lodged within the digestive system or causes damage to the intestinal wall, leading to potentially life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding.

Dr. Homan’s warning underscores the importance of preventing children from accessing and consuming these filters.
