Access to a general practitioner: without 136,251 people

Persistent Issues Remain Regarding Access to Primary Care in Slovenia

A recent review of materials related to healthcare coverage within Slovenia highlighted a longstanding challenge: the number of insured individuals lacking access to a general practitioner, dentist, and gynecologist. The report indicates that these issues have been consistently present throughout the years. While there has been a slight decrease in the number of insured individuals without a general practitioner over the past year, limitations in available choices continue to be a primary source of concern.

As of April 30th, the data revealed 136,251 individuals across Slovenia were without a general practitioner or paediatrician. This figure includes 31,952 foreign citizens residing temporarily in Slovenia and covered by additional family medicine outpatient clinics. Regional variations exist in the proportion of individuals without a general practitioner.

The Murska Sobota regional unit reported the lowest rate at 2.8 percent, while Novo mesto experienced the highest at 9.1 percent. The ongoing situation underscores the need for continued efforts to expand access to primary care services and address the factors contributing to disparities in healthcare access across the country.

  1. It’s deeply concerning that so many Slovenians still face barriers to essential healthcare services.
