The pilot was arrested on June 1. Investigators claim that he had flown more than 900 domestic and international flights between 2009 and 2025 as captain, without ever obtaining a proper pilot license or passing mandatory knowledge and skills tests, CNN reports. He was even promoted to the position of aircraft commander and managed Boeing 767, 777 and 787 aircraft for almost 17 years, earning almost three million Canadian dollars (almost two million euros) during that time.
The investigation of the case is named Project Icarus. The case is reminiscent of the story from the 2002 movie Catch Me If You Can, in which a teenager (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) convinces a Pan Am airline to hire him as a pilot by pretending to be a pilot.
