Will the astronauts have to evacuate?

Crew-12 Crew Takes Security Position Due to ISS Module Concerns

Four members of Crew-12, including two American astronauts, a French astronaut, and a Russian cosmonaut, were moved to a secure position aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday. NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens confirmed the action via social media X, citing ongoing concerns regarding the Zvezda module. The Zvezda module, a key component of the Russian ISS segment, has exhibited persistent cracks and air leakage for several years.

NASA has been monitoring the mock-up for years, and Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, has implemented various mitigation measures in the past. As a precautionary measure, NASA directed the Crew-12 astronauts and astronaut Chris Williams to relocate to the SpaceX Dragon capsule, currently docked at the station. This capsule serves as a rescue vessel and provides a safe haven in the event of an emergency evacuation.

The move underscores the continued monitoring of the Russian-built module and highlights NASA’s commitment to the safety of the international crew. The situation remains under observation as further assessments are conducted.
