The world premiere of the Slovenian minority film took place in New York

Director Dina Duma Details Inspiration Behind New Film

Skopje-based director Dina Duma revealed the origins of her upcoming film, stating the project began with a striking image observed by the river in Skopje. Duma explained that she saw a 12-year-old girl skateboarding, wearing a šalvar – loose trousers. “I saw a young girl on a skateboard, dressed in traditional šalvar.

She was 12 years old, still a child. But in her eyes and presence, I saw something else – a mature woman.”

The director described the image as profoundly impactful, repeatedly returning to it in her mind. This persistent visual led to the impulse to create the film.

Duma acknowledged the sensitive nature of the subject matter, emphasizing a commitment to responsible storytelling. “I realized that it touched a very sensitive topic, so the question of how to approach it responsibly was always in the foreground,” she stated. The Slovenian Film Center (SFC) highlighted Duma’s thoughtful approach, noting the central role of this initial observation in shaping the creative direction.

The film is currently in production in New York.
