Increase in Ljubljana Zoo: three Siberian tigers have been born

Ljubljana Zoo Welcomes Three New Siberian Tiger Cubs

The Ljubljana Zoo announced the birth of three Siberian tiger cubs last Wednesday, marking a significant event for the zoo and conservation efforts. The cubs are the offspring of Arise and Ussuri, both members of the endangered subspecies of the Siberian tiger – one of the world’s largest and most threatened big cat populations. Arise, four years old, and Ussuri, five years old, arrived at the Ljubljana Zoo in the summer of 2024, having been transferred from zoos in Poland and Norway.

The pair have successfully adapted to their new environment, facilitating the successful breeding and birth of the cubs. Siberian tigers are apex predators vital to maintaining the health of ecosystems. As top predators, they play a crucial role in regulating herbivore populations, thereby influencing the stability and well-being of forest habitats.

The size of a tiger’s habitat is largely determined by the availability of prey, and areas can accommodate multiple males. Zoo officials highlighted the importance of this birth in contributing to the conservation of this critically endangered species. Further research is ongoing to monitor the cubs’ development and ensure the continued success of the breeding program within the Ljubljana Zoo.
