The first move of the new government: Palestinian flags no longer on Gregorčič Street

Palestinian Flag Removed from Government Palace Following New Government Takeover

Ljubljana – The Palestinian flag was removed from the facade of the government palace in Ljubljana following the swearing-in of the new government led by Janez Janša on June 1st, 2024. The flag had been symbolically raised at the end of May 2024, coinciding with the Golob government’s decision to propose the recognition of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state. The action by Prime Minister Janša represents a swift confirmation of a shift in Slovenia’s foreign policy direction.

Prior to this, the Golob government had initiated the proposal for Palestinian state recognition. Former Prime Minister Robert Golob commented on the immediate removal of the flag, stating, “The first action at the first moment of the new government says more than a thousand words.”

The Palestinian flag was taken down from the building immediately after the new government took its oath. This move signals a clear departure from the previous administration’s stance and underscores a commitment to the previously announced policy changes.

The government’s decision is a key development in the ongoing discussions surrounding Palestinian statehood.

  1. This decision feels like a significant step backward in Slovenia’s commitment to supporting Palestine.
