Mass tourism following the global pandemic has achieved remarkable record levels. There’s a strong desire to travel amongst many people, yet city residents are voicing their opposition: “We don’t want further growth.” The consequences of this surge frequently include the degradation of natural landscapes, an amplified environmental impact, and a decline in the quality of life for local communities. These issues often materialize as housing shortages, severe traffic congestion, and increased overall living expenses.
Tourism remains a significant industry, generating numerous jobs and substantial financial advantages for local populations. The European tourism sector is projected to contribute nearly 1.9 billion euros to the EU’s GDP by 2025, representing approximately 10.5% of the total. This industry provides more than 23 million jobs across the entire European Union.
Notably, 2025 proved to be another record year for EU tourism, mirroring the exceptional performance of 2020. During that year, the number of tourists visiting the EU exceeded the 2019 figure by 50 million. People clearly want to experience travel, but the negative impacts are becoming increasingly apparent.
