Right-Turn Arrows at Red Lights Face Safety Concerns in Slovenia
Ljubljana – The use of traffic signs displaying a green arrow, allowing right turns at red lights in several Slovenian municipalities, is drawing criticism from safety advocates. Initially implemented in 2021 by the Ministry of Infrastructure, the measure was intended to reduce waiting times for drivers. However, concerns are mounting regarding its impact on intersection safety.
Organizers of a recent consultation highlighted the increased complexity of traffic interactions created by these signs, particularly posing risks to pedestrians and cyclists. They cited foreign professional literature, noting a lack of comprehensive research specifically addressing this issue within Slovenia. Aljaž Plevnik, from the urban planning institute, emphasized a key danger: “The most dangerous thing is when drivers turn right while turning.” The existing system allows for right-hand traffic turning at red lights in numerous settlements, a practice that continues to be debated.
The debate centers on balancing traffic flow with pedestrian and cyclist safety, with organizers urging further investigation and a reassessment of the current implementation. The continued use of these right-turning arrows remains a point of contention within the Slovenian traffic landscape.
