The coalition supports mandatory drug testing, Levica is hesitant

Slovenian Officials Back Drug Testing Proposal, Debate on Cannabis Inclusion

The largest coalition party, SDS, has expressed support for a proposed legislation requiring regular drug testing of state officials, citing the public’s right to transparency regarding government performance. SDS member Andrej Poglajen stated that the initiative aligns with provisions within the current coalition agreement, which includes assessing officials’ conduct. The proposal currently excludes cannabis, classifying it as a prohibited drug.

However, SDS representatives indicated they intend to advocate for its inclusion, pending the formal proposal. Poglajen clarified that while a specific proposal regarding cannabis testing hasn’t been formally presented, the party will evaluate it upon receipt. Democratic Party leader Tadej Ostrc adopted a more cautious stance.

He noted that cannabis use for medical purposes was recently legalized by the previous parliamentary session. Ostrc emphasized the expectation of responsible behavior from political figures, suggesting the Democrats would generally support the testing proposal. The debate centers around the scope of the legislation and whether to specifically address the use of cannabis, a point that remains subject to discussion within the coalition.

The SDS’s position highlights a key area of potential divergence as the proposal moves forward.
