Siberian whales are increasingly not staying near the coast of California, but also heading to San Francisco Bay, where they stay for days or weeks. Scientists attribute this to climate change, as warming in the Arctic and changes in sea ice reduce the amount of food whales need to eat, AP News reports. Many whales are now found in the shipping lane between the islands of Angel, Alcatraz and Treasure, which directly overlaps with ferry and ship routes.
Experts warn that there are more whale-boat collisions in San Francisco Bay. The population of gray whales in the eastern Pacific has halved in the last 10 years to about 13,000 individuals, probably due to poorer feeding conditions, the AP News reports.
