Deep under the crystal turquoise sea, the sandy beaches and palm-roof bungalows of the Maldives lie in a deep cave system, without light and colorful sea life that inhabits the higher waters. It is in this tropical paradise, or more precisely around 50 meters below it, that five Italian divers died. The Italians died while diving.
PHOTO: Profimedia The speculation about why they couldn’t be saved from the narrow underwater cave at the Vaavu Atoll is many, but there are no official data about the cause of the accident yet. The group had permission to dive deeper than 30 meters, as permitted by Maldivian recreational diving restrictions, the local authorities have said. It is not yet clear whether the divers went deeper than they planned and whether they had the appropriate equipment for it.
The authorities found the bodies of the five only after several days.
